READY OR NOT…THE HOLIDAYS ARE HERE…A TIME PEOPLE GENERALLY ASSOCIATE WITH FAMILY AND GIVING.
The Thanksgiving holiday in particular crosses all religious and political boundaries, bringing families together around the dinner table, expressing gratitude for what they have, regardless of how much or how little.
It’s also the biggest time of the year for food related charities like the Harry Chapin Food Bank. Associate Director Joyce Jacobs says, “People are thinking about family and friends, they are sitting down at the table together and thinking of others sharing the same experience.”
While Harry Chapin collects staples and feeds our community year round, this time of year they especially look for donations of turkeys and chickens. In fact, Harry Chapin needs 10,000 turkeys and chickens by November 20th.
While many folks physically visit the warehouses in Fort Myers and Naples to make donations, monetary gifts help the food bank buy exactly what they need. The math is quite impressive. $14 is enough to provide a turkey and for every $1 donated, Harry Chapin can turn it in to $6 worth of food.
Once again this year, the food bank is partnering with Publix in their Food For Sharing program. From November 5-25, you can purchase bags of food that contain the basics for a traditional Thanksgiving meal. They even make it possible to purchase pre-made dinners in a box, perfect for the elderly clientele that Harry Chapin also serves.
Jacobs says, “We really look forward to that drive. It takes the guesswork out of “what do I buy?”
Donations also come pouring in from individuals hosting holiday parties, where guests are asked to bring a canned food item. No matter how small your drive might be Jacobs says, “They inspire people to get involved and do something. One person at a time can really make a difference.”
A part of the Harry Chapin community for 25 years she says, “We don’t just fill tummies, we give good nutrition. It is the basic foundation of our development, adequate nutrition. It’s not just my job, it is a mission.”
