She is known for being cool under pressure, delivering the news with compassion and authority and having a heart for education issues. Thome’s mother and sister were teachers so it seemed a perfect fit for her to be the face of Eye On Education for WINK News. Through that special news segment, she became an expert on issues involving the local and state school systems.
In between her work and home life, she makes time to volunteer and speak to various groups, especially young people. She says, “There is something about younger people that really energizes you; they are so open and willing to learn.”
Thome finds the young people she comes in contact with are craving direction and it is rewarding to help give it. She adds, “It is exciting for me, I get instant gratification and instant reward for my time.” Thome dug her feet into the education community way before she had kids of her own, now they are 8 and 11. She laughs, “They make life go by faster.”
While the kids got a break from school during the summer, Thome and her husband made sure the siblings read books and were kept on the same sleep schedule so, “when the first day of school comes they can get out of bed.”
Her kids are at an age where they enjoy going to school and thankfully, she says, both are good students. Thome’s mantra to motivate them, “I expect your best, whatever that is…give it to me and I will be satisfied.”
She is also one to practice what she preaches. It’s not easy being on TV in the evening when many school activities take place. She often has to miss events but reminds her kids that just as she expects them to do their best, others expect her to do the same: not only her managers and co-workers but also her loyal viewers. AND SHE DELIVERS!
