What happens to your lawn when night falls? Does it go to sleep or does it come alive thanks to lighting? Neida Carvalho, owner of Davidson Irrigation, is a mastermind when it comes to landscape lighting and design.
Lighting doesn’t just boost curb appeal; it also adds a layer of security to your property and home. She explains, “Imagine your neighborhood and you’re a bad guy. You drive by a home that’s dark and one next door has lighting around it. Where do you think the bad guy is going to go? The one that is dark and inviting.”
She compares landscaping lighting to leaving a porch light on for security. A timer can also be installed so homeowners can control the lighting when out of town.
Woman and Veteran-Owned Business
Growing up, Neida’s stepfather owned a marine salvage company in Virginia. She began working with him at the age of nine and by the time she was a teenager knew how to fix boat motors and pumps, she even learned how to weld.
After graduating from high school, she joined the United States Coast Guard where, thanks to her experience growing up, she transitioned into the field of diesel mechanics with ease.
When she left the Coast Guard in 1989, Neida formed a lawn care business, later adding irrigation services. As the business took on a new life, she got a contractor’s license enabling her to take on bigger projects; operating the only woman and veteran-owned business of its kind in Southwest Florida.
The outdoor lighting part of her company is something she has become more and more passionate about over the last few years and she has become quite the expert at it. Neida is now highly sought after for her vision and design.
If you have a pool cage and your back yard is dark and dull when the sun goes down, she can light it so the space becomes a warm and inviting one, no matter what time of the day or night. Boat docks are another important place to consider adding landscape lighting. Neida says, “I use green dock lights; they attract the fish. It is another unique offering that also offers safety.” If you have ever stepped off a dock in the dark of the Southwest Florida night, you understand.
Neida is not only an expert in the layout and design of landscape lighting, but also making sure her creations are safe as far as light placement and voltage, whether they are around walkways and bushes or waterfalls and ponds.
While landscape lighting is igniting her passion these days, irrigation is still the foundation of her business. Davidson is a full-service irrigation company offering professional inspections and repairs on sprinkler heads, rain sensors, timers, leaks, and more.
The businesswoman says, “If your irrigation system is not installed correctly it’s like having a car that’s a lemon, it will irritate you forever.” Many times all that is needed is a small repair rather than a total replacement.
From Dreams to Reality
Landscape lighting packages typically begin in the $3000 range, however, Neida says, “I’ll do as much or as little as you want. I’ll even do a nighttime demo so you can have an idea of what it would look like.” She is particularly good at listening to what homeowners’ need, want, and dream of for their yards, and can turn any or all into reality.
“I absolutely love what I do,” says Neida. “Every day is something different and unique. I love making people’s yards come alive.”
